One might think from this DVD's title that it was created from sifting through several Michigan rail DVDs to arrive at the cream of the crop. But no, this is the producer's one and only DVD on MI railroads. No matter. It includes 2 hours and 19 minutes of non-stop action from several locations, mostly in southeastern Michigan, although the videographer did venture out as far west as Battle Creek and as far north as Port Huron. The late 1990s era is covered and includes the freight trains of: CSX, CN/GTW, NS, Conrail Shared Assets, I&O. Several Amtrak and VIA passenger trains are included. Also, a number of foreign units are seen. I appreciate this DVD, since Michigan has often been overlooked, and this shows the variety of roads and traffic handled. The low-keyed narrator provides train symbols and other details throughout. However, he irritates when he mentions Pere Marquette and mispronounces Pere, as well as the place names of Wyandotte, Rouge (River), and Rougemere (Yard). Overall, because of the production problems when originally taped, this DVD is not as clear and well-lighted as it could be. Still, there are many scenes that can no longer be duplicated.
